“Redevelopment plans are underway for a historic South Side home that’s sat vacant and in disrepair for two decades, according to the Chicago Housing Authority’s interim CEO.
“The announcement comes more than a year after Block Club Chicago reported that the home in the 10500 block of South Corliss Avenue was unused and deteriorating — one of hundreds of CHA homes sitting empty as the city struggles with an affordable housing shortage.
“The Corliss property, which is more than 150 years old, is part of the South Side neighborhood’s rich labor history. The area is a city, state and national landmark. The CHA has owned the Corliss row house since 1983.
“Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives bought the property for $15,000 from the CHA, group President said David Doig. The nonprofit and the CHA signed an agreement to transfer the property in April and closed the deal a few weeks ago, Doig said.

“The group’s purchase of the Corliss property and others in the area is part of a years-long effort to revitalize Pullman. It’s also part of a city program called Rebuild 2.0 that rehabs vacant buildings in disinvested communities.
“The city, Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives, the Cook County Land Bank and other partners have worked together to rehab and sell dozens of homes in the Pullman area.
“Doig said Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives is now looking for a developer to carry out the renovations on the Corliss property, which would be a total gut rehab. Two years ago, CHA officials anticipated repair costs for the Corliss home would ‘exceed its value,’ and a needs assessment in late 2023 estimated repair costs at more than $495,000.” (Hinton, Block Club Chicago, 8/4/25)
