“Thirteen years after it first went up for sale and now a lender-owned foreclosure, a Hutchinson Street mansion had a near miss with selling in the past several weeks.

“But the deal collapsed today, and the North Side mansion is coming back on the market, at not much more than what the previous owners paid for it in 1989.

“Built in 1913 on what was then called Kenesaw Terrace, the 12,000-square-foot red brick Prairie-style mansion was the work of architect George W. Maher. Twelve decades later, it retains many of his design selections, including stained glass, mantelpiece tile and carved wood.

“The couple had done an extensive rehab. In 2012, they told a Chicago Magazine reporter that they updated the kitchen, several of the six bathrooms and all mechanical systems, and re-created wood paneling in the library that previous owners had torn out to accommodate a hot tub.”

“Hutchinson Street is in the Buena Park section of Uptown. Its development as a lake-adjacent mansion district began in 1894, when Charles Scales built a house designed by George W. Maher. Scales laid a street through the rest of the land he owned and sold lots to other families, several of whom also tapped Maher for his designs over the next two decades.

“The house is protected from demolition, as it’s in a landmark district and part of an ensemble of historical homes with a shared architectural provenance. While it seems like a candidate for purchase by a preservation-minded rehabber, Olszewski said he expects the ultimate buyer to be an end-user homeowner who ‘sees the beauty here that you can bring back.’ (Rodkin, Crains Chicago Business, 1/10/24)
