“Two apartment buildings that will reshape a busy North Center intersection have been approved by City Council.

“The buildings will be at 3959 N. Lincoln Ave. and 3950 N. Damen Ave. at two sites owned by Fifth Third Bank on the southern end of the Damen/Lincoln/Irving Park intersection.

“The proposal for 3959 N. Lincoln Ave. will overhaul the current bank building there with an added addition to create 64 affordable housing units available to victims of gender-based violence and their families.

“Local nonprofit Apna Ghar will also offer additional services for building residents, like therapy, childcare and employment assistance.” (Myers, Block Club Chicago, 10/10/24)

Preservation Chicago applauds the adaptive reuse of the historic bank building into affordable housing. We consider the adaptive reuse of the historic buildings into residential housing and residential affordable housing to be a best practice. Additionally, we’d encourage decision-makers to pursue Chicago Landmark Designation for both the Art Deco limestone bank building at 3936 N. Lincoln Avenue and for the original Lincoln Trust & Savings Bank, located across the street at 3936 N. Lincoln Avenue. 3936 N. Lincoln Avenue is not part of this redevelopment plan.
