WIN: 1500 N. Halsted Will Be Converted to Residential

“The Chicago City Council has approved a residential conversion of existing office space at 1500 N. Halsted. Planned by Newcastle Investors, the office space is located on the upper floors of a four-story commercial building at the northwest corner of N. Halsted St and W. Blackhawk St.

“With City Council approval secured, the site will be rezoned from C3-5 to B3-5. The developer can now move forward with permitting and construction.” (Kugler, Urbanize Chicago, 6/19/25)

“Newcastle Investors is proposing a residential conversion of the upper floors of 1500 N. Halsted St., a 116-year-old, four-story building at the corner of Halsted and Blackhawk streets, according to a zoning application filed last week.

“The plan calls for transforming the building’s former office space — most recently used by a co-working facility — into 31 apartments. The mix would include junior one-bedrooms, one-bedrooms and two-bedrooms. Six of the units would be designated as affordable housing.

“The redesign was led by Chicago-based SPACE Architects + Planners. Crain’s first reported the news. (Filbin, Block Club Chicago, 4/23/25)
