Friends of the Uptown Theatre presents “Celebrating 100 Years of the Uptown & More” “Balaban & Katz in Uptown Square” April 19, 2026

“Hosted by longtime Uptown Theatre caretaker David Syfczak and The Landmark Uptown Theater Corp. (NFP), this FREE event includes a history program, brief videos about the Uptown, and a tour of the historic Riviera Theatre.

“The program begins at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 19, at the Riviera, 4746 N. Racine Ave., in the heart of Uptown Square.

“Local journalist, photographer and author Robert Loerzel will give a talk about the histories of Balaban & Katz, the Riviera, the Green Mill, the Uptown, and more! Co-author and founder of Friends of the Uptown Andy Pierce will take us on a visual tour of the Uptown itself through 1925 photographs.

“Local organist Daniel Boin will play organ music on stage for the program, and Riviera Theatre facilities manager John Booher will lead a group tour of the venue!

“CityFiles Press publisher Mike Williams will be at the door with a few remaining books left to sell. ($50 cash or Zelle.) “The UPTOWN: Chicago’s Endangered Movie Palace” is now listed as out of print. We will also have Uptown Theatre posters for sale, and other interesting items.

“The event is FREE. If you would like to give, donations will be accepted for the nonprofit “The Landmark Uptown Theater Corp.,” which is responsible for the Uptown’s original Victor S. Pearlman of Chicago light fixtures and chandeliers. LUTC raises funds to both restore the fixtures and to provide educational outreach activities to encourage the restoration and use of the Uptown.”
