La Salle Flowers opened in 1936 at the corner of La Salle and Superior in Chicago’s River North neighborhood. The shop quickly became a familiar fixture in the area, known for its iconic neon sign and its long-standing presence serving residents, businesses, and visitors in downtown Chicago.
Over the decades, La Salle Flowers has provided floral arrangements for countless celebrations and special moments, becoming part of the neighborhood’s visual and cultural landscape. The store’s classic neon sign remains one of its most recognizable features and a reminder of Chicago’s historic streetscape.
Now part of the Ashland Addison Florist family of shops, La Salle Flowers continues its tradition of providing high-quality flowers and dependable service to downtown Chicago. The shop remains committed to preserving its legacy while continuing to serve the community with beautiful floral design.
Ashland Addison Florist was founded in 1932 on the corner of Ashland and Addison in Chicago and has remained a family-owned business for four generations. It all began when S. Roy Sheffield was paid with flowers instead of cash by local flower growers for carting flowers to market. In turn, he made small bouquets and sold them for ten to twenty-five cents at the corner of Ashland and Addison, then a busy streetcar intersection.
From those humble beginnings, the flower stand grew into one of Chicago’s most established florists, serving generations of families for celebrations, weddings, memorials, and everyday moments. Today, the Sheffield family continues to operate the business with locations in Pilsen and Prentice Women’s Hospital. Over the years, the company has also welcomed several historic Chicago flower shops into the family, including La Salle Flowers, Kelly’s Flower Shop, Lofendo Flowers, Bunches (a flower shop), and Swansons Blossom Shop – continuing a legacy of local florists serving Chicago since 1932.
