“Former Rep. Bobby Rush, who served 15 terms in Congress, including one following an election where he beat future President Barack Obama, is selling his longtime home in Bronzeville.
“Rush is asking $795,000 for the property on Calumet Avenue, which includes a restored 1880s row house with five bedrooms and a large lot next door where Rush built an addition to the house and a detached garage.
“Rush has lived in the house for at least 30 years, according to Cook County public records. It’s not clear from the records when he and his wife, Carolyn, who died in 2017, bought the house, but in 1994 they acquired the then-vacant lot next door from the city of Chicago.
“The row house’s facade of rusticated red stone and a pair of detailed oriel window towers is a picturesque remnant of the late 19th-century wave of stylish homes in Douglas, as the neighborhood was called.
“The interior includes a good deal of vintage wood detail, including fireplace mantels, door frames and the staircase, as well as new materials that complement them, such as wood columns and window frames in the room addition.” (Rodkin, Crain’s 11/23/24)
