Chicago Historic Plaque Program

The Chicago Historic Plaque Program helps homeowners recognize and celebrate the architectural and historical significance of their home. The pilot has begun in selected historic areas of Lincoln Park, including the Sheffield Historic District and nearby historic residential blocks.

Chicago’s historic neighborhoods are defined not only by landmark buildings, but by the many individual homes that together create a distinctive architectural fabric. Each year, historic residences are lost to demolition, redevelopment, or significant alteration.

Preservation Chicago researches every home nominated and approves the wording for the plaque, free of charge. Participating homeowners receive a short researched summary of their home’s history, based on available historical records. Read why the program exists and how it works.

The program is a partnership between Lincoln Park Neighbors and Neighborhood Leaders, Preservation Chicago, and the University of Chicago. Peter Millen conceived the program and leads it. Emily Talen, Professor of Urbanism at the University of Chicago, and her students assist with the research. The Bronze Memorial Company in Broadview, Illinois produces the plaques; the cost of the plaque is the responsibility of the homeowner.

More than 60 Lincoln Park homeowners have requested a plaque since the program launched in September 2026.
